DISTRICT III JAZZ FESTIVAL SELECTION PROCESS
The honor for the students is being nominated by the teacher for the festival. There are no auditions (with the exception of rhythm section players in specific scenarios). Teacher should nominate students in grades 7 and 8 who:
- Have a desire to attend
- Display appropriate behaviors (as they are representing their schools)
- Demonstrate command of their instrument (are able to play the parts)
Teachers may nominate up to (but no more than) 5 students per school. With the exception of the percussion and bass players, students should be ranked in order of preference (1 = most “qualified”). Although this does not guarantee their acceptance (remember the honor for the students is being nominated), it gives the co-managers a good jumping off point while trying to round out the band (and include as many kids as possible).
The band will consist of:
6 alto saxophones
4 tenor saxophones
2 bari saxophones
8 to 9 trumpets
8 to 9 trombones
2 bass
2 guitar
2 keyboard/piano
2 percussion
Other instruments (flutes, clarinets, etc…) will be accepted at the conductor’s discretion.
Basically, the instrumentation will double the score (and triple the alto saxophones).
If more than two percussionists and/or bass players are submitted, an audition will be required. In this event, details will be forwarded to the schools affected.
